You can read every word on this site without telling us anything. Nothing here is behind a sign-in, there is no advertising, and there are no trackers. What follows is the short list of places where you might choose to give us something, and what happens to it.
Reading
Which chapter you are on, the size of the text, whether the original tongue is showing, and where you left off are kept by your own browser, on your own device. They are never sent to us. Clearing your browser clears them.
Once a day, a device that opens the site sends one short word made of random letters, so that we can count how many devices opened it in a week. The word is thrown away and made again each week, it is not tied to anything else, and nothing about you travels with it. We keep those counts for eight weeks and then delete them. If your browser is set to ask sites not to track you, nothing is sent at all.
The recitation and the English narration are streamed from Quran.com, with EveryAyah as a second home. When you press play your browser speaks to them directly, so they see your address as any website you visit does. We do not receive anything from them about you.
Writing to us
The contact form sends us your name, if you give one, your email address, and what you wrote. It reaches an inbox and a phone. So that an answer can find its way back to you, your address and your note are held for ninety days and then deleted. We reply, and that is all we do with it.
We do not add anyone to a mailing list for writing to us.
The daily prayer and verse
If you ask for the morning letter we keep your email address and the date you asked, and nothing else. Every letter carries a link to stop it, which works at once and without a reason. Ask us and we will delete the address itself.
An account, if you make one
An account exists for one purpose: so that the verses you save, the notes you write and the places you mark follow you from your phone to your computer. We hold your email address and those saved things. We do not hold a password: you sign in by a link sent to your address, or through Google if you prefer.
You can read everything without one, and what you save stays on your device if you never make one. Ask us and the account and everything in it is deleted.
Who else touches it
The site and its data sit on Google's Firebase, in London. Email is sent through Brevo. A note from the contact form also reaches a phone through Telegram. Each of them sees only what is needed to do its part, and none of them is given anything to use for their own ends. Nothing is sold, and nothing goes to advertisers or data brokers.
The servers keep ordinary logs, which include the address your browser connects from. They come with serving a website rather than being gathered on purpose, and we do not use them to build a picture of anybody.
What you can ask for
You can ask what we hold about you, ask for it to be corrected, ask for it to be deleted, ask us to stop using it, or ask for a copy you can take elsewhere. These are your rights under UK data protection law and you do not need to give a reason. Write to us and we will answer within a month, and we hope a good deal sooner.
If we have got something wrong and you are not content with how we dealt with it, you may complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
